What Are SEO Meta Tags?

SEO meta tags are snippets of HTML code in a page’s `` section that describe the page to search engines and browsers — not part of the visible content a reader sees. The most talked-about ones are the title tag, the meta description, and the (mostly obsolete) meta keywords tag, with a few others playing smaller supporting roles.

Not every meta tag affects rankings, and treating them as if they carry equal weight is where a lot of confusion comes from. Some directly signal what a page is about. Some influence whether people click once it’s showing in results. One used to matter and now doesn’t at all. Sorting out which is which is the point of this page.

What Counts as Metadata in SEO?

“Metadata” is the broader term — data that describes other data, rather than making up the content itself. On a webpage that includes the meta tags below, but it can also stretch to Open Graph tags (which control how a link looks when shared on social platforms) and schema markup (structured data labeling what type of content a page contains). “Meta tags” is the narrower, more specific term for what lives in the HTML ``.

The meta tags most relevant to SEO:

Title tag. The clickable headline in search results and the text shown in a browser tab. Covered in detail below.

Meta description. A short summary of the page, often — though not always — shown as the snippet under the title in search results.

Meta keywords. A now-defunct tag once used to list a page’s target keywords. Google has confirmed publicly that it does not use this tag as a ranking signal.

Meta robots tag. Tells search engines whether to index a page (`index`/`noindex`) and whether to follow its links. It’s not the same as blocking a page in `robots.txt`: a page marked `noindex` still has to be crawled for a search engine to see and honor that instruction, while a page blocked in `robots.txt` may never get crawled at all.

Viewport meta tag. Tells browsers how to scale a page on different screens. Not a ranking tag itself, but part of what makes a page mobile-friendly, which connects to Google’s mobile-first indexing.

What Is an SEO Title (the Title Tag)?

The title tag is the single most influential meta tag for SEO. It’s the headline that appears in search results, the text shown in a browser tab, and often the link text used when a page is shared or cited elsewhere.

A good SEO title:

Includes the primary keyword, ideally near the front. Search engines treat the title tag as one of the strongest signals for what a page is about.

Is written for a human, not just an algorithm. A title that reads like a keyword dump looks spammy and tends to get passed over for titles that read naturally.

Stays within a practical length. There’s no official hard character limit — Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, so the exact cutoff varies. As a guideline, keeping titles to roughly 60 characters or fewer reduces the chance of truncation.

Is unique on every page. Duplicate title tags — common on e-commerce and directory sites — make it harder for search engines to tell pages apart, and can dilute how each one ranks.

Matches what the page delivers. A title promising something the page doesn’t answer creates a mismatch that tends to show up in higher bounce rates and weaker rankings over time.

The title tag is a separate HTML element from a page’s H1 heading, even though the two often read similarly — see the FAQ below for how they differ.

What Is a Meta Description?

A meta description is a short block of text in a page’s `` that summarizes what the page covers. It’s the sentence or two that often appears under the title link in results — though Google frequently rewrites it, pulling a different snippet from the page when it decides that text answers the query better.

The meta description does not directly affect rankings. Google has said this clearly, and it’s one of the more persistent pieces of outdated SEO advice still floating around. What it does affect is click-through rate: a specific, compelling description that matches search intent makes someone more likely to click your result over a competitor’s, even at the same position.

Practical guidance:

Summarize the page specifically, not generically. “Learn about our services” tells a searcher nothing. Stating exactly what the page answers gives them a reason to click.

Include the target keyword naturally. When a searcher’s query matches text in your description, Google often bolds it in the snippet, helping the result stand out.

Keep it tight. No official fixed limit, but writing to roughly 150–160 characters is a reasonable target that keeps most descriptions from getting cut off.

Write a unique one per page. Letting a CMS auto-generate the same boilerplate description across many pages wastes the opportunity and can look thin to search engines evaluating quality at scale.

Skip it, and Google pulls a snippet directly from the page content instead — sometimes that works fine, sometimes it’s an awkward fragment. Writing your own gives you control over what searchers see.

What About Meta Keywords — Do They Still Matter?

No. The meta keywords tag was originally meant to let a site owner list the terms a page should rank for. It was abused almost immediately — pages stuffed with irrelevant, high-traffic keywords to try to game rankings — and Google has confirmed publicly, for a long time now, that it does not use the tag as a ranking factor at all.

Leaving it off a page today doesn’t cost you anything. Filling it in doesn’t help either. If you’re auditing an older site and find pages stuffed with meta keywords, they’re generally safe to ignore or remove — not actively hurting the page, just doing nothing for it.

Which Meta Tags Actually Affect SEO Today?

Putting it together:

Title tag — matters a lot. A strong, direct signal of page topic, and a major factor in whether someone clicks your result.

Meta description — matters indirectly. No ranking effect, but a real effect on click-through rate.

Meta robots tag — matters for control, not ranking. Tells search engines what to index and what to leave out, especially useful on larger sites with thin or duplicate pages.

Viewport meta tag — matters for mobile usability. Not an SEO tag in the traditional sense, but a prerequisite for the mobile-first experience Google expects.

Meta keywords — doesn’t matter. Google ignores it. Don’t spend time on it.

This is the kind of work that shows up in most on-page optimization engagements — see what an SEO service typically includes for how these tags fit into a broader audit, and how to use keywords for SEO for where to place a target keyword once you’ve chosen one.

Do Meta Tags Matter for AI Search Visibility?

Worth understanding, even if it’s a lighter-touch consideration than the ranking questions above. AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity — don’t display a page’s title tag and meta description as a blue-link snippet the way a traditional results page does. That doesn’t make the tags irrelevant.

A clear, specific title tag still gives these systems a strong signal for what a page covers — the same reason it matters for traditional search. A vague or generic one gives an AI system less to work with when deciding whether a page is worth referencing. That’s a reasonable inference from how these systems process web content, not a claim about how any specific engine weighs the tag internally — nobody outside those companies has full visibility into that.

The practical takeaway is the same one that applies to traditional SEO: write titles and descriptions that specifically and accurately describe what’s on the page, rather than generic placeholders. That serves human searchers, traditional rankings, and AI systems parsing the page, all at once.

Common Questions

What is metadata in SEO?

Metadata is the umbrella term for data that describes a webpage rather than making up its visible content. In an SEO context that most often means the meta tags on this page — title tag, meta description, meta keywords, robots tag — though the term can extend to Open Graph tags for social sharing and schema markup for structured data. “Meta tags” is the more specific term for the HTML elements themselves.

How long should a title tag be?

No official hard limit — Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, so it varies by page. As a practical guideline, keep titles to roughly 60 characters or fewer to avoid truncation in most cases.

How long should a meta description be?

No official fixed limit either, but roughly 150–160 characters is a reasonable target that reduces the chance of truncation. Google may replace your description with a different snippet from the page anyway, depending on the search query.

Do meta keywords help SEO?

No. Google has publicly confirmed it doesn’t use the meta keywords tag as a ranking factor. It’s safe to skip.

What’s the difference between a title tag and an H1?

The title tag (``) controls what shows in the browser tab and, usually, the search results headline. The H1 is the main visible heading on the page itself. They often read similarly but don’t have to match exactly — the title tag is metadata about the page, the H1 is part of its actual content.</p></div></details><details class="mp-faq__item"><summary class="mp-faq__q">How do I check what meta tags a page has?</summary><div class="mp-faq__a"><p>View the page source in your browser (“View Page Source” or similar) and look inside the `<head>` section, or use your CMS’s SEO plugin, which usually shows and lets you edit these fields directly. In an SEO context that most often means the meta tags on this page — title tag, meta description, meta keywords, robots tag — though the term can extend to Open Graph tags for social sharing and schema markup for structured data. “Meta tags” is the more specific term for the HTML elements themselves."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How long should a title tag be?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No official hard limit — Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, so it varies by page. As a practical guideline, keep titles to roughly 60 characters or fewer to avoid truncation in most cases."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How long should a meta description be?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No official fixed limit either, but roughly 150–160 characters is a reasonable target that reduces the chance of truncation. Google may replace your description with a different snippet from the page anyway, depending on the search query."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Do meta keywords help SEO?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No. Google has publicly confirmed it doesn’t use the meta keywords tag as a ranking factor. It’s safe to skip."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What’s the difference between a title tag and an H1?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The title tag (``) controls what shows in the browser tab and, usually, the search results headline. The H1 is the main visible heading on the page itself. They often read similarly but don’t have to match exactly — the title tag is metadata about the page, the H1 is part of its actual content."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How do I check what meta tags a page has?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"View the page source in your browser (“View Page Source” or similar) and look inside the `` section, or use your CMS’s SEO plugin, which usually shows and lets you edit these fields directly. For a broader free-tool audit checklist, see how to do SEO yourself."}}]}</script> </body> </html>
